Joseph de MAISTRE Four unpublished chapters on Russia published by his son, Count Rodolphe de Maistre. Paris, A. Vaton, 1859. In-8 of VII, 196 pp, (1) f., contemporary binding in half tan leather, spine ribbed with gilt fillets and red calf title label, spotted edges. First edition. In this work written in 1811 at the request of count Razumovski, Russian minister of public education, and perhaps intended for emperor Alexander I, De Maistre considers modern Russia from four angles: freedom, science, religion and illuminism. Unpublished letters of Count Joseph de Maistre. Saint Petersburg, Cluzel, 1858. In-8 of 53 pp. plus a facsimile out of text, bradel half-chagrin eggplant, gilt title on the back, cover preserved (Honnelaître). First edition. Four letters addressed in 1810 to Admiral Paul Tchitchagoff and one to his wife, the latter accompanied by an essay on the word Patrie. Well completed with the facsimile of the postscript of the letter n° 3. Rare, badly described by Talvart (XIII, p. 86).
