Large overmantel in molded, carved wood and... - Lot 47 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
Large overmantel in molded, carved wood and gilded stucco with German Rococo decor. The upper part is adorned with a flowery bowl, flanked by two putti seated on the edge of a rocaille architecture. The corners are decorated with small pagodas linked by festooned garlands of flowers. The mirror is embellished on the shoulders with espagnolettes of acanthus foliage and framed by scrolled baguettes of foliage. First half of the 18th century. H_378 cm W_183 cm This exuberantly exotic paneling illustrates the German interpretation of the French rocaille style. Its design and ornamental treatment are similar to the work of Jean-François Vincent Joseph de Cuvilliés for royal residences, as demonstrated by one of the rooms in Amalienburg Castle; the Munich residence, Palace of Prince Elector Charles-Albert of Bavaria (Reiche Zimmer fig.1 and fig. 2) features similar paneling decorations.
