Felletin Large wool and silk tapestry panel depicting King Ahasuerus Late 17th - early 18th century. H_300 W_300 cm Maintenance restorations. Remarkably fresh colors. Ahasuerus is a Persian king in the biblical books of Esther and Ezra, traditionally identified with Xerxes I. He ruled 127 provinces from India to Ethiopia. He ruled 127 provinces from India to Ethiopia. Ahasuerus organized a congress in the form of a gigantic banquet, to which all the princes, ministers, governors of his provinces, and commanders of the armies of Persia were invited. The king showed them the splendid wealth of his kingdom and the dazzling magnificence of his greatness and power for 180 days. The aim was simple: Ahasuerus wanted to secure their loyalty and fidelity in order to create a coalition that would go to war, attaching new countries to his kingdom. So it was that all the diplomatic delegations from these provinces, accompanied by their military leaders, were received in Susa. The king himself appeared before each delegation, dressed in the priestly vestments of the Jews, stolen and recovered during the sacking of the Temple. The panel depicts the jewels and gold after the sacking of the Temple in Jerusalem. The border is decorated with garlands of flowers and stylized foliage. Expert: Mr Frank KASSAPIAN
