Chased and gilded bronze clock symbolizing a protective allegory of the Levant navy and trade. It is topped by a medallion, decorated with the "Profil de Louis XVI" on a book bearing the motto "Je vogue au gré de la fortune et protégée du dieu Neptune" ("I sail at the mercy of fortune and protected by the god Neptune"). The dial is signed: Poitevin A LORIENT. Wire movement. The set rests on a blackened wood base decorated with friezes and rosettes, supported by four feet. France. Late 18th century.
