Wall-mounted cartel in chased and gilded bronze. - Lot 188
Wall-mounted cartel in chased and gilded bronze. It is crowned with an allegory of "Venus illuminating the world" and adorned with two angels in the clouds. The movement is signed: Julien Roy de la Société des Arts Paris Julien II Le Roy (1686 - 1759) Paris. Louis XV period H 56_cm The venus torch is missing. Small chips to the enamel on the dial. A missing enamel cartouche was probably inscribed "Julien Le Roy à Paris". Bibliography: A similar model is in the Musée Carnavalet, Paris. Reproduced in Encyclopédie de La Pendule Française du Moyen Age au XXe siècle, by Pierre Kjellberg, p.100, fig. D. Other cartels are signed by Parisian clockmakers Fiacre Clément, Audinet, Mynuel, and a larger model with a variant by Causard. Born in Tours, Julien Le Roy moved to Paris, where he apprenticed with Le Bon. Awarded the title of master clockmaker in 1713, he subsequently became a juror of the guild and a juror of the Société des Arts from 1735 to 1737. In 1739, he became ordinary watchmaker to King Louis XV. He chose his cases from the best craftsmen, including Caffieri, André-Charles Boulle, Jean-Joseph de Saint-Germain, Robert Osmond, Balthazar Lieutaud and Antoine Foullet. His dials were supplied by Antoine-Nicolas Martinière, Nicolas Jullien and perhaps Elie Barbezat. Today, Julien Le Roy's work can be found in some of the world's greatest collections, including the Louvre, Cognacq-Jay, Jacquemart-André and Petit Palais museums in Paris; the Château de Versailles, Victoria and Albert Museum and Guildhall in London; and Waddesdon Manor in Buckinghamshire; the Musée International d'Horlogerie in La Chaux-de-Fonds and the Musée de Zeitmessung Bayer in Zurich; the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and the Musées Royaux d'Art et d'Histoire in Brussels; the Museum für Kunsthandwerck in Dresden; the National Museum in Stockholm and the Musea Nacional de Arte Antigua in Lisbon. In the United States, works by Le Roy can be found at the J. P. Getty Museum in California, the Walters Art Gallery in Baltimore and the Detroit Institute of Art. Expert: Stéphane Pepe
