Important Tapestry from the Manufacture Royale d'Aubusson - Lot 227
Important Tapestry from the Manufacture Royale d'Aubusson Pastoral scene Carton inspired by cartoons by Jean Baptiste Huet ( 1745-1811) France - circa 1770/75 In wool and silk Interlacing border of crenellated branches surrounded by polychrome flower garlands. H_256 cm L_312 cm Beautiful polychromy. Restorations. Shrinkage. Lined tapestry. Velcro on back. In the foreground, among tree trunks surrounded by colorful flowers, we see a village woman carrying a basket on the left, and in the center a group of three figures, three sheep and a billy goat. A shepherdess is about to place a flower collar on a sheep, alongside a shepherd who is making the collar with a cord, near a fountain, surrounded by rich vegetation. To prepare their sheep for transhumance, shepherdesses make flower necklaces for their animals. This practice is still used in some parts of France. Expert: Mr Frank Kassapian9
