S.l., August 30 (circa 1798). 1 p. two-sheet in-4. address on verso. The Viscomte de Rivarol has tried several times to see Fontanes in his campaign, but without success. "You have had the patience to read my brochure? And will you be so kind as to comment on it? That's friendship, and I was counting on it. You add gallantry to all that: you call me Pollux. In truth, if I didn't have more reason than I have self-respect, you'd be the man to seduce me. We've just published an extract from Castor's [his brother Antoine's] work, good thing you called him that, entitled De la philosophie moderne, which is making a lot of noise and selling like hotcakes. Try to get hold of this brochure. Garat and Ginguéné must be shuddering with rage. Are you still working on your beautiful poem? Forte epos acer fontanus ducit. I long to hear some of it, for although I no longer write verse, I still love it. I am sending you the collection of my literary opuscules. I have selected all the passable ones and burned the rest. I thought I would make a little money from these pamphlets, but when they were printed, my bookseller, who had promised me 300 copies, had the impudence to write me that he would only send them to me when he had sold his own.
