PELL, John
"At Amsterdam, Pell's fame was enhanced by his Controversiae de vera circuli mensura, which attacked C.S. Longomontaus and earned the approbation of Roberval, Hobbes, Cavendish, Cavalieri, Descartes and others" (DSB). First edition of the Latin translation of Pell's refutations of Longomontanus' solution of the quadrature of the circle. The Danish astronomer was Tycho Brahe's only disciple and published the famous Astronomica Danica in 1622, based on his teacher's work.
