Peace Kiss in gilded bronze with an embossed silver plaque representing the Virgin's Wedding. Joseph holding a flowered stem and Mary are united by a bishop who grabs one hand from each of the bride and groom; carved frame decorated with putto heads, strips, fruit groups, cut leather, head crosses; scroll handle; inscriptions on the back MAIESTRO DI NOV[I]CCI GIO[VANNI] BATT[IST]A DI LORENCI ANTONIO CVPPARDI GIO[VANNI] PELLEGRINO RIZZI A[NNO] D[OMIN] I XXV FEB[B]RAR[IO] MDCXXIV (Novice Master Jean- Baptiste di Lorenzi, Antoine Cuppardi, Jean Pellegrini Rizzi the year of the seigneur 25 February 1624). Marked. Mounting: Northern Italy, late 16th century with posterior inscription from 1624 Plaque: 17th century or posterior with Austrian title stamp 1866-1922? Total height: 21.3 cm - Width: 12.2 cm (added and uneven top cross) Source: former collection of William Henry Crocker, U.S. (19th century bank magnate whose family opened the first museum on the west coast of the United States) The frame is listed in the Mario Scaglia collection as Venice, from the late 16th century. The plate could have been placed in 1624 following the inscription of the back during the object's lifetime of use. Book consulted: F.
