BROWN LION with a long cylindrical body, open mouth, prominent eyes, erect ears and stylized mane. Benin, second half of the 19th century. H_15.5 cm L_27.4 cm This lion, emblem of the Fon kingdom, is to be compared to another belonging to the Fisher H. Nesmisth, Jr. collection published in the book by Warren M. Robin and Nancy Ingram Nooter, African Art in American Collections, Schiffer Publishing Ltd, 2004, fig 544. (fig.) Provenance: certificate from the Galerie Sant-Jordi in Barcelona in 1973, dating from the 16th century.
