Marble PLATE of ogival shape carved in high... - Lot 7 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
Marble PLATE of ogival shape carved in high relief of a Tree of Life with three birds of prey. Symmetrical decoration on either side of a stem whose base is divided into leaves with scrolls and the tip into two curved leaves; eagle with outstretched wings at the top and, in the middle register, two birds perched on the scrolls facing each other, their heads turned upside down; all around, an ornamental frame composed of a frieze of fusaroles, interlacing and denticules. Venice, Venetian-Byzantine art, 12th / 13th century Height: 81 cm - Width: 36.5 cm Foundation (small restorations and accidents) Provenance: former private Norman collection, Manche, owned for 60 years The subject of the Tree of Life, an iconography taken from Byzantine art, was particularly appreciated in Venice for these bas-reliefs used to decorate the facades of palaces and churches. Several of these plaques can be found in museums, notably the one in the city of Berlin, which preserves half a dozen decorated with animal fights and also with Trees of Life. However, some are still visible in situ in Venice, such as the six plaques in the Palace da Mosto gallery overlooking the Grand Canal. The ogival shape of the upper part is considered typical of Venetian production, and the bird plaque presented here shows a particularly rich frame. Works consulted: A. Zorzi and P.
