PLATE in alabaster carved in high relief... - Lot 16 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
PLATE in alabaster carved in high relief with polychrome highlights representing the Descent from the Cross. In the centre, Christ is grasped by Nicodemus while two executioners, one on a ladder, unhook him from the cross with pincers; on the left, Mary shakes the right hand of her Son; behind her, St John is standing with a book in one hand and the palm of martyrdom in the other. England, Nottingham, 15th century Height: 41 cm - Width: 23.5 cm In a moulded wooden frame (lower right corner broken, small missing, cracked, slight restoration) A plaque from the same period in the Victoria and Albert Museum shows a similar composition (inv. A.185-1946, fig.a). It derives from an earlier composition that included two additional figures placed behind the Virgin, as shown on a plaque belonging to an altarpiece in the Museum of Capodimonte in Italy from the second half of the 14th century (fig.b).
