BERNIER (François).
History of the last revolution in the estates of the Great Mogol. According to the print in Paris, by Claude Barbin, 1671- Continuation of the memoirs of Mr. Bernier... The Hague, Leers, 1671-72. Four volumes in two volumes petit-in-12 of (4) ff. 182 pp., a map; (1) ff. 201 pp. (badly figured 101); 252 pp.; 192 pp., 19th century hard vellum binding, red edges, handwritten titles on spines. Pretty and rare editions appended to the Elzéviers. They include the four parts of the travels of François Bernier, published the previous year in Paris (Claude Barbin, 1670-71). A folding map of the Empire of the Great Mogol. A doctor and disciple of Gassendi, François Bernier was one of the most brilliant personalities of Parisian society of his time. Deciding to travel, he visited the Middle East and spent twelve years in India, eight of which as the Emperor Aureng-Zeyb's physician. The protection of Emir Danichmend enabled him to enter Kashmir, a region then virtually unknown to Europeans. His relationship is one of the best and most accurate that one has with India at that time. "Bernier's travels bring to light regions that no European had visited before him, and that have not been better described since" (Hoefer). (Hoefer). "Relationship seen as a model of accuracy" (Gay). Very good example. Binding of volume I a little dusty, spine rubbed. Willems, 1846, which describes only the first three parts; Brunet, I, 802.
