[COLIN (Antoine)].
History of Drugs, Spices, and some simple medicines, which are born in India and America... Lyon, Jean Pillehotte, 1619. In-8 of 102, (7) pp., (8) ff, 369, (15), 176, (5), (3 bl.), 262, (6) pp., contemporary binding in olive-green morocco, double gilt garlands on covers and spine, gilt edges. Second edition of this important collection of East and West Indian medicinal plants. Numerous woodcut fi gures in the text. The Lyon pharmacist Antoine Colin has gathered here and translated into French various 16th century treatises previously published in Latin by the botanist Charles de L'Ecluse. The first part contains the works of the Portuguese Garcia da Orta - on American singles, published in 1563 - and Christophe Acosta - a treatise on drugs in use in the East Indies, published in 1578. L'Histoire du Baulme, the French translation of Alpinus' work, which appears here for the first time and has a special title, has been bound here at the head, although it is the fourth book of this first part. The second part of the collection contains the Traité des drogues de l'Amérique, by the Spanish physician Nicolas Monardès, published in 1574. Exceptionally bound at the time in decorated morocco. Light-coloured moulding in the upper margins of the leaves on part of the volume, a gallery of verses touching the text on about fifteen leaves; small stains on the binding, restored headings and corners.
