ARGENSON (René-Louis de Voyer de Paulmy,... - Lot 9 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
ARGENSON (René-Louis de Voyer de Paulmy, Marquis d'). Considerations on the old and present Government of France. Amsterdam, 1784. In-8 of (4), viii, (9), 301 pp., contemporary basane binding, spine decorated, marbled edges. Important edition, considerably revised and partly original, published by the son of d'Argenson, the marquis de Paulmy. Second draw, no errata. Written for the most part in 1734, the work, which circulated in manuscript form, was not published until 1764, after the author's death, on a copy, according to Paulmy, which was faulty and truncated to the point that its meaning was altered everywhere. This new version, which is based on several manuscripts, presents such differences that "the two texts cannot be considered at first sight as expressing the thought of d'Argenson" (Renouvin). D'Argenson's economic doctrine, hostile to luxury and in favour of free trade, has much in common with that of the physiocrats. Without acknowledging him as a precursor, the latter addressed the same praise to him as to Gournay. A very good example. Little missing from the upper headdress, worn out husks. INED, 87; Stourm, P. 107; Renouvin, Provincial Assemblies, pp. 31-36.
