George SAND.
La Mare au Diable. Paris, Desessart, 1846. 2 volumes in-8: brown half calf, spines decorated, speckled edges (period binding). First edition. As soon as it was published, the novel dedicated to Frédéric Chopin was hailed as a masterpiece. The first part of the "rustic trilogy", it was also received as a plea in favour of the people and their virtues. (Clouzot, p. 244: "Rare and much sought after.") A fine copy to which is attached the autograph manuscript of the preface to the novel. Dated 1845 and entitled: "Préface d'un roman inédit, fragments", the manuscript of eleven leaves written on the front only includes some twenty erasures and corrections. Mounted on tabs, it is bound in modern half morocco in the Bradel style with corners, with a title-piece on the first board. From the Bradley Martin library, with bookplate (1989, no. 1198). It offers a very different version of the preface printed at the head of the book.
