Wifredo LAM.
Composition. 1952. Ink on paper, signed and dated lower left (34,5 x 27 cm). Superb drawing by Wifredo Lam that belonged to Yvonne Zervos. Cuban painter, member of the surrealist group in Paris, Wifredo Lam (1902-1982) owes much to the friendly protection of Picasso. Linked to Breton, whose poem Fata Morgana he illustrated, his work is, in Breton's opinion, "a flight of egrets at the front of the pond where the myth of today is elaborated" (Le Surréalisme et la Peinture). He added, "Wifredo Lam, who remembers both the best of Picasso and his native West Indies." With her husband Christian, Yvonne Zervos (1905-1970) ran Cahiers d'Art, a magazine, gallery and publishing house. The drawing is reproduced in the December 1952 issue of Cahiers d'Art. Provenance: former Yvonne Zervos collection, according to a note on the reverse of the frame, then gallery Le Point du Jour (Jean Hugues).
