DEMIDOFF.
Journey in Southern Russia and the Crimea through Hungary, Wallachia and Moldavia, executed in 1837. Edition illustrated with sixty-four drawings by Raffet. Dedicated to H.M. Nicolas I, Emperor of all the Russias. Paris, Bourdin et Cie, 1840. Large in-8, contemporary binding in full dark blue chagrin, on the boards a large decoration of interlacing drawn with double gilt fillet in a frame of a cold scroll and two gilt fillets, spine decorated in the same way, inside return decorated with three gilt fillets, gilt edges. First edition. Equestrian portrait of the emperor Nicholas I and 23 plates on mounted chine. Complete with the music plate (Marche Valaque), often missing, but without the eight-page dedication which is almost always missing (cf. Vicaire, III, 166, who states: "I have seen five or six copies, including the one offered to Raffet by Prince Demifoff, and I have encountered these eight pages of dedication in only one (which is not Raffet's); the table of contents makes no mention of them"). A very fine and rare copy, perfectly preserved in full contemporary decorated chagrin.
