LACROIX (Paul, dit le Bibliophile Jacob).
Historical stories for young people. Illustrations by Messrs Toni Johannot, Gavarni and Gigoux. Tours, Pornin et Cie, 1844. Large in-8, burgundy half-maroquin with long grain and corners, smooth spine decorated in full, gilt head, untrimmed, illustrated cover preserved (Durvand). First edition. 20 out-of-text lithographs on tinted background by Tony Johannot, Gavarni, Jean Gigoux, Hector Martin and Eugène Tourneux; woodcut vignettes in the text. Beautiful white general cover with extensive arabesque decoration printed in blue and gold with typography in red (and not vice versa as described in Carteret, III, 351). Reissue, under a new title, of the Contes du bibliophile Jacob à ses petits-enfants published in 1831, with the exception of a short story, La Fève, which replaces here La leçon de 1436. A fine copy enriched with a portrait of Paul Lacroix lithographed after Gavarni, taken from the Galerie de la presse, de la littérature et des beaux-arts.
