OLD NICK (Emile Forgues, dit) et GRANDVILLE.
Petites misères de la vie humaine. Paris, Fournier, 1843. Large in-8, red morocco, framed with six bold and thin gilt fillets, spine ribbed and decorated, lace and fillets inside, untrimmed, illustrated cover and spine preserved (Champs). First edition. 50 plates out of text, including two frontispieces and numerous vignettes in the text, all woodcut after Grandville. The beautiful cream-coloured front cover is illustrated on both boards and on the spine with unpublished vignettes, the one on the first board, very amusing, signed by Brugnot. "Charming illustration, one of the wittiest by Grandville" (Carteret, III, p. 471). A very fine copy, cited by Carteret. It is enriched with a rare publication prospectus printed in red and black, illustrated on the verso with shadow puppets (one loose leaf). From the library of Antoine Vautier (I, 1971, n° 131), with bookplate.
