Le foyer breton, traditions populaires, illustré par MM. Tony Johannot, O. Penguilly, A. Leleux, C. Fortin et Saint-Germain. Paris, Coquebert, s.d. (1844). Large in-8, half aubergine long-grained morocco with corners, spine ribbed and decorated, untrimmed, illustrated cover and spine preserved (Mercier sr de Cuzin). First edition. Portrait of the author after Belloc, engraved by Normand, 4 figures out of text engraved on steel by Jacque and 50 wood-engraved vignettes in the text. Remarkable collection of Breton folk tales, "an indispensable complement to the ancient and modern Brittany of Mr. Pitre Chevalier" (publisher's prospectus). A superb copy, cited by Carteret (III, p. 565), enriched with: - the complete set of 17 covers, intended to contain the first 27 issues (out of 30), the last three having been supplied with the general cover; - the illustrated prospectus; - an autograph letter signed by Emile Souvestre, dated January 27, 1845, addressed to the Société des gens de lettres; he lists his latest publications, including the Foyer breton, for possible publication by the Society.
