A page of history (1603). Paris, Lemerre, 1886. In-12 of a frontispiece, (3) ff. (the first one blank), II, 31 pp. one plate, (1) f., eggplant morocco lined with blue morocco, framed with bold and light fillets on the boards, spine ribbed and decorated in the same way, gilt fillet on the lining, pink silk brocaded endpapers, gilt edges on witnesses, cover preserved (Marius Michel) First edition, decorated with two plates out of text by Ostrowski, etched by T. Courbouin, one of which is a frontispiece. One of the twenty first copies on Chine. This historical account deals with the theme of incest, recurrent in the work of Barbey d'Aurevilly. The author was inspired by the story of Marguerite and Julien de Ravalet de Tourlaville, incestuous brother and sister, beheaded in 1603. Signature J. Barbey d'Aurevilly in red ink on the title page (small discharge on the margin of the frontispiece). From the libraries of Raymond Claude-Lafontaine, for whom the copy was bound by Marius Michel, with his gilt bookplate at the bottom of the first flyleaf (Paris, 1923, n° 169); Laurent Meeûs (Wittock, n° 939) and Charles Hayoit (II, 2001, n° 194).
