Loves. Romantic suite. Preface by Maximilien Vox. Monaco, Editions du Rocher, 1949. In-12 of 252 pp, (2) ff, half raspberry leather with corners, ribbed spine decorated with multiple gilded fillets, gilded head, untrimmed, illustrated cover and spine preserved, case (Semet et Plumelle). Partly first edition. Three of the five short stories did not appear in the first edition of the collection (1944) and two appear here for the first time : La Louve, and Le Signe du Taureau. One of the 60 numbered first copies on pur fi l du Marais (n° 6) enriched on the false-title with this autograph sending: For Marie et Michel Herbert,/this book where so many/ resonances agitate a/ heart which knows/mal oublier/J. de La Varende. The copy has been enriched by Herbert with the pre-original of the short story Le Signe du Taureau, published in Je suis partout in May 1941 and four newspaper articles related to the book. On the first three and the last flyleaf, the dedicatee has carefully copied in ink the text of his bibliography of La Varende related to this work as well as articles of literary criticism concerning it.
