High relief in curved shape in blue, white... - Lot 63 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
High relief in curved shape in blue, white and black enamelled terracotta representing the Virgin worshipping the Child. On a lavender blue background, the Virgin is kneeling, her hands joined, leaning over the Child. It is accompanied by the dove of the Holy Spirit and surmounted by two winged angel heads. Florence, Andrea della Robbia's workshop, 16th century. Height: 79 cm - Width: 48 cm (small jumps and enamel removal) Since the second half of the 15th century, the Florentine workshops of the Della Robbia have been creating numerous devotional reliefs in which the theme of the Virgin and Child has a prominent place. There are many variations of the Virgin in adoration before the Child. It is in Andrea's workshop that this subject will be the most treated, enriched with different details and figures. One of the most refined representations is this one, the Virgin kneeling with her hands joined before her Son lying on the ground, as a sign of humility. The composition derives from the central subject of the altarpiece of the Nativity executed by Andrea della Robbia for the major church of La Verna dating from 1479, a large-scale version that features about fifteen characters around the Virgin (fig. a). Most of the plates show the Virgin on the right, unlike the one shown here, whose model is rarer. However, this typology is found in a plaque from the Adele L. L. Lehman collection or in another from the former Denon collection, which was deposited in the Louvre at the Château d'Azay-le-Rideau in 1907 and is not yet located (fig. b). Book consulted: Exhibition Nice-Sèvres2002-2003, Les Della Robbia, Enamelled terracotta sculptures of the Italian Renaissance, Musée national Message Biblique Marc Chagall - Musée national de Céramique, cat. J.-R. Gaborit and M. Bormand ed., pp. 94-95, 101-102. A thermoluminescence test from the Art Test laboratory, n° RC117, dated 13/07/17, will be given to the purchaser.
