Silver monstrance partly glazed, repelled, carved and engraved with decoration of cabochons of hard stones, precious stone and pearls (lapis lazuli, citrine, garnets, chrysoprase, baroque pearls, emerald, malachite, turquoise) containing in its lunula an amethyst plate painted recto/verso. On one side is the Submergence of the Pharaoh's Army (Exodus 14:21-26): Pharaoh in his chariot and army are swallowed up by the waves imitated by the white of the stone, above, the Jewish people led by Moses dressed in a green robe and a red cloak that can be found sitting in the scenes on the reverse side that also deal with the Exodus. Amethyst: South Germany, Augsburg ?, first quarter of the 17th century Mounting: 19th century Total height: 29 cm Foot diameter: 14 cm - Lunar diameter: 10.5 cm (polychrome lacks and an element of the lunula) A painting on a round onyx plate of a quiz of a very similar diameter is kept in the Badisches Landesmuseum in Karlruhe, Germany (inv. n° 95/900, fig.). It depicts a battle scene with a multitude of characters executed with the same dexterity while using the natural veins of stone for the landscape.
