Catalogue raisonné de l'oeuvre édité, Les Expressions contemporaines,2003, model listed under n°SE18, p.95 The model of the Vineyard Fisherman in Puys was born from the artist's encounter with a young fisherman. Very sick, Carpeaux stayed in Puys (near Dieppe), where his friend Alexandre Dumas provided him with a workshop. In a letter to Bruno Chérier, he recounts his meeting with the girl he then invited to pose for him:"... I saw from the top of the car an admirable leg emerging in the movement of walking, from below the rags that only went down to the knees...". This model is the last one he made for the edition before dying the following year. It was operated by his workshop from 1875.
