Warhol draws his portrait of bare shoulders, as he did for almost all of his female models, starting with the color of his normal skin, then applying thick white makeup everywhere to minimize skin variations and compensate for the powerful effect of the Big Shot flash. The elaborate application of make-up was part of Warhol's highly ritualized method. This approach has made it possible to highlight the beauty and stature of the woman and to create the kind of neutral look Warhol seeks in his photographs and in the serigraphic paintings on photos that often result from Polaroid sessions.
