CHRIST ON AN ARCHITECTURAL BACKGROUND. Rectangular... - Lot 132 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
CHRIST ON AN ARCHITECTURAL BACKGROUND. Rectangular bronze plaque with natural patina representing the Flagellation of Christ. Florence, after a model from the entourage of Baccio Bandinelli (1488, 1560), second half of the 16th century. H_16.9 cm L_14 cm On a red velvet background. Provenance: Galerie Petit Horry, Saint Ouen. Acquired in 1968. Reference: Francesco Rossi, La collezione Mario Scaglia, Vol. 1, p. 344, Vol. 2, Bergamo, 2011, p 571, Fig. LVII. This platelet is quite rare. One print is known to be smaller (13.4 cm x 9.8 cm) in the Lanna collection in Prague (Sale Berlin, Rudolph Lepke's, 21-28 March 1911, lot 323) and another in the Bardini collection, without indication of dimensions (Sale London, Christie, 27 May 1902, lot 268). Only one copy of comparable dimensions (17.3 cm x 14.5 cm) is in the Mario Scaglia collection in Bergamo; it is stipulated in the catalogue that it is a single copy. Rossi places this plate of the Flagellation in the circle of the Florentine artist Baccio Bandinelli, while in previous catalogues it was attributed to Moderno or Vincenzo Daddi. The iconographic model of this scene has not been identified; however, its composition is close to a fresco that Sebastiano del Piombo made around 1516-1524 in the church of San Pietro in Montorio in Rome showing Christ's torture against a colonnade.
