PHALLUS AILÉ, secular sign, made of lead... - Lot 20 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
PHALLUS AILÉ, secular sign, made of lead and tin alloy. Turned to the right, the phallus is mounted on two legs, provided with a tail and a bell; rest of the pin on the reverse. Last quarter of the 14th century Height: 2.2 cm - Length: 2.2 cm Classified among the so-called "erotic" signs, this winged phallus had rather an apotropaic value. Such specimens were found in Paris during the dredging of the Seine, and several were in the famous Forgeais collection. The museum of Cluny has three of a very comparable model (CL. 3739, 23437, 23470). Consulted work: D. Bruna, Enseignes de pèlerinage et enseignes profanes, Musée national du Moyen Age - Thermes de Cluny, Paris, 1996, pp 317-318.
