BUST OF CHRIST in limestone carved with traces... - Lot 31 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
BUST OF CHRIST in limestone carved with traces of polychromy. Head strongly inclined on the right shoulder, surrounded by a twisted crown of thorns with long wavy locks of hair resting on the shoulders; soothed face with closed eyes, half-open mouth framed by comma-shaped whiskers, chin bordered by a short beard. Champagne ? mid-fifteenth century Height: 30 cm (slight lacks in the crown, fragment) It is not easy to identify on this beautiful fragment of Christ the characters of a regional school. However, it reminds us of some of the faces of the actors of the original sepulchre of Chaumont (Haute-Marne). In addition to a very comparable treatment of the locks of hair and the nobility and restraint common in the expressions, one also notices on the forehead of Christ drops of blood in relief which make one think of the tears shed by the affliction of several characters from the Chaumont sepulchre. However, the Master of Chaumont seems to be a singularity in the landscape of Burgundian sculpture, Jacques Baudoin, even making comparisons with German statuary, links his art to "this expressionism dear to the Colon school". Work consulted: J. Baudoin, La sculpture flamboyante en Champagne Lorraine, ed. Créer, n.d., pp.114-118.
