LARGE PLATE in polychrome painted enamel... - Lot 44 - Pierre Bergé & Associés
LARGE PLATE in polychrome painted enamel with gold highlights representing the Coronation of Thorns; counter-enamel in light salmon-coloured flux. Christ, with a reed in his hand as a sceptre, sits in the centre of the composition; he is surrounded by six executioners, four with sticks placing the Crown of Thorns and two kneeling, harassing or mocking him; a soldier watching the scene lies in the foreground while a group of figures, including two priests in the background on the left, assist; in the background, a curved door and garlands of leaves and fruit in the upper corners. Limoges, attributed to Léonard Limosin, circa 1560 Height: 25 cm - Width: 19 cm On a velvet backsplash Provenance: old private collection, Lyon (some restorations) This large plate of a removed execution is the work of a true painter as the drawing is lively and expressive with a harmony of colours illuminated only by the yellow touch given by the hair of the soldier lying in the foreground. It is an original composition reminiscent of the etchings that Leonard Limosin devoted in 1544 to episodes from the life of Christ. Only eight plates of this coherent series have been preserved, none of which features the Coronation of Thorns. However, it can be noted that the dimensions of the leaves, 25 cm high by 19 cm wide, are very similar to those of the plate. Their style is visibly influenced by the Fontainebleau school with their figures of slender stature and animated attitudes as here (fig.a and b). This Coronation of Thorns was probably part of a suite intended for a large altarpiece. Limosin often interpreted sets of plaques with religious subjects, as shown by the Genesis and Passion plates of the now dispersed Debruge-Dumesnil collection, dated 1533-34, and the large 1557 series of a dozen oval plates kept at Ecouen (ECL 904 A-L, EC 38). The Coronation plate, which has in common the palette of colours, the design of the faces, the liveliness and originality
