Finely carved and openwork alabaster sconce with gold highli - Lot 51
Finely carved and openwork alabaster sconce with gold highlights representing Suzanne and the old men. The chaste Suzanne, whose nakedness is simply covered with a modest cloth, is sitting on a bench; she is surrounded by two old men who press themselves against her, each grasping one of her arms. Southern Netherlands, workshop of Jacques Du Broeucq (1505-1584), mid-16th century Height: 20.7 cm - Width: 24 cm On a purple velvet backsplash. (some wear and tear, minor restoration) One recognizes here the elegance and vivacity of the compositions of Jacques Du Broeucq, architect and sculptor from Mons, whose masterpiece is the rood screen of the cathedral of Sainte-Waudru in Mons. The elongated barrel of the figures, the fine noses and long beards of the male faces, the lengthening of the fingers are quite characteristic of his work. The care taken in the interpretation of the architectural elements, with a scholarly perspective, is also remarkable in this artist. Inspired by classical architecture, they often share common features, notably the pillar on which Suzanne rests, surmounted by a sphere found in the bas-relief of the Ecce Homo of the collegiate church in Mons (fig.) Work consulted: R. Didier, Jacques Du Broeucq 1505-1584, Mons, 2000, p.169.
