BORY DE SAINT-VINCENT (Jean-Baptiste).
Essays on the Fortunate Isles and ancient Atlantis, or a précis of the General History of the Canary Islands. Paris, Baudouin, year IX. In-4 of (4) ff, 522 pp., (1) f., 10 pl., contemporary half-basane fawn binding, spine decorated, tr. jasp. First edition. Large map of the Canary Islands, Map of Tenerife and Conjectural Map of Atlantis, the latter with red enhanced outlines; seven natural history plates engraved by Colin from the author's drawings. Important monograph on the Canary Islands. It also presents the theory of the author, naturalist and geographer Bory of Saint-Vincent, on the mythical Atlantis. Ex-libris from the library of Hugues-Bernard Maret, then Marquis de Bassano (1763 - 1839), chief of staff of Napoleon I and one of his closest collaborators. He accompanied the Emperor in all his campaigns and was made Duke in 1809. The spine of the binding is missing, the upper jaw is cracked. Good condition inside (slight foxing, small marginal tear without missing the first map).
