CHANVALLON (Jean-Baptiste-Thibault de).
Trip to Martinique. Paris, Bauche, 1763. In-4 of (4) ff., VIII, 192, 79 pp. (46 pp. of supplement between pages 135 and 136), a map, contemporary marbled calf binding, spine decorated, speckled edges. First edition A folding map out of text. Chanvallon was appointed member of the Superior Council of Martinique in 1751 and charged to establish the statistics of this island. He worked there for five years and added to his account many observations on meteorology, topography, the morals of the inhabitants... One finds in particular, in this "highly esteemed" (Leclerc) relationship, very interesting information on the Caribbean Indians of Martinique . Clear molding in the inner margin of about fifteen leaves and in the lower corner of the last ten; skillful restorations to the binding.
