FROGER (François). - Lot 62
FROGER (François). Relation of a voyage made in 1695, 1696 and 1697 to the African coasts, Strait of Magellan, Brezil, Cayenne and the Antilles Islands, by a Wing of the Vaisseaux du Roy, commanded by M . de Gennes. Paris, Nicolas le Graz, 1700. Petit in-8 of 6 ff., 219, (1) pp., frontispiece and 29 plates and maps, contemporary binding in speckled calf, spine decorated, spine glued. Third edition. One frontispiece and 29 plates and maps, most of them folding. De Gennes, a French naval officer, had obtained from Louis XIV six ships and nearly a thousand men to try to establish a colony in the Strait of Magellan, in order to hinder English trade. He failed in his attempt after calling at Bahia and Rio de Janeiro. The account of the engineer Froger, a member of the expedition, published in 1698, contains interesting and accurate information about these cities as well as curious and picturesque details about the inhabitants of Sao Paulo. Very good copy. Ex-libris Dezauche. Sabin, 26002; Borba de Moraes, 285.
