LINSCHOTT (Jean Hugues de). - Lot 98
LINSCHOTT (Jean Hugues de). History of the navigation of Jean Hugues de Linschott Dutch in the East Indies. (followed by:) The great sea route. (followed by:) Description of America and parts of it, such as New France, Florida, the West Indies, Iucaya, Cuba, Iamaica, etc. (followed by:). Amsterdam, Evert Cloppenburch, 1638. Three parts in a single volume in folio of (4) ff, 206 pp.; (2) ff, 181 pp.; (1) ff, 80 pp. (badly numbered 86), old tawny calf binding, spine grotesquely decorated and stamped with the arms of the count of Toulouse at the beginning of the 18th century, two fillets on the covers, gilt edges. Third edition in French, the most complete, with botanical and medical annotations by the physician and naturalist Paludanus. The first French edition, published in 1610, included only the first part. The illustration consists of: two title-frontispices engraved by Wouters; a title with a vignette of views of a caravel and four Dutch cities, engraved by Cornely; a portrait of Linschott; 32 double-page non-text plates (views, genre scenes, types); two large folding plates showing the profile of the island of St. Helena; two large folding plans of the towns of Goa and Angra do Heroismo divided into two plates each; six large engraved folding maps, including a world map and a map of South America and the West Indies. In 1579, Linschott entered the service of Vicente Fonseca, Archbishop of Goa, and followed him on his missions to India. After Fonseca's death, he joined an expedition which, under the command of Barents, attempted to reach China by seeking a passage through the North Seas. On his return to Holland, he succeeded in convincing the government to send a new expedition for the same purpose in 1595, but the fleet was stopped by ice before entering the Kara Sea. The first part contains the relationship of Linschott's voyage in the service of Fonseca. It is followed here by the Great Sea Route, relating the voyage from the coast of Brazil,
