LOBEL (Mathias). - Lot 99
LOBEL (Mathias). Plantarum seu Stirpium historia. - Nova stirpium adversaria. Antwerp, Plantin,1576. Four parts in a folio volume of 671 (i.e. 675, engraved title included), (4), 471, 15, 24, 15 pp., early 19th century half-basane binding. First edition, given by Plantin, of the four parts of this classic work by the Flemish physician and botanist Mathias Lobel (1538 - 1616). More than 1,700 botanical woods in the text engraved by Cornelius Muller, Van Campen, Arnold Nicolai and Antoine Vander Leest after Martin Van der Borcht. Only the Stirpium adversaria nova, which here forms the second part of the set, had been first published in London in 1570-71. As the edition did not sell well, Plantin bought back 800 copies and included them in his own edition with a few modifications. The margin of the first folios was crumpled, there were some small lacks in the engraving of the title-frontispiece, there was a clear watering in the upper margin of some of the notebooks, and the jaws were skilfully restored. Voet, III, 1578; Nissen, BBI, 1218; Pritzel, 5548.
