LUDOLF (Samuel). Historia aethiopica... Frankfurt, Zunner, 1681. In-folio of 168 ff. numbered a-b4, A-Z4, Aa-Rr4 (the last white one), 8 plates, contemporary brown calf binding, decorated spine, red edges. First edition. Eight plates engraved out of text, including seven superb and spectacular large folding plates, and two genealogical tables on double page. The large map of Ethiopia, dated 1683 (two years after publication), sometimes attached to the edition, is not present here. A major work of a scientific nature on Ethiopia, its history, its inhabitants, its climate, its natural environment, its language and its literature, the work of the German orientalist Samuel Ludolf. A pioneer of Ethiopian linguistic studies, he mastered the Amharic and Giiz dialects and wrote the first grammars and dictionaries of these languages. Most of his history is based on Jesuit sources as well as first-hand information provided by Abba Gregory, an Abyssinian monk he met in Rome and invited to Germany. Good copy.
