MAGAILLANS (Gabriel de). - Lot 102
MAGAILLANS (Gabriel de). New relationship with China. Paris, Claude Barbin, 1688. In-4 of 13 ff., 385, (1) pp., (5) ff., a plan, contemporary binding in speckled calf, spine with ornate ribbing, speckled edges. First edition, rare. R.P. Magaillans (1609 - 1677), Portuguese missionary of the Society of Jesus, left for Goa and Macao before being sent to China in 1640. He settled in Peking in 1648 under the protection of the first emperor Qing Shunzhi and died of the ill-treatment inflicted on him when the latter died in 1662. His work is a valuable source for the recent history of China, its political organization and the description of the imperial city. Very complete with the large folding map of Peking, which is often missing. Excellent copy. Ex-libris Dezauche. Antique library label on the lower back.
