MARINI (Giovanni Filippo de). - Lot 107
MARINI (Giovanni Filippo de). A new and curious relationship between the kingdoms of Tunkin and Lao. Paris, Gervais Clouzier, 1666. In-4 of (4) ff, 436 pp. (several numbering errors), early 19th century marbled calf binding, decorated spine, red edges. First edition in French, published three years after the Italian original. The translation is by Father Nicolas Lecomte, célestin. Father Giovanni Filippo de Marini, a Jesuit missionary, born in 1608 in Taggia, in the State of Genoa, embarked for India in 1638, preached for fourteen years in Tonkin, was appointed rector of the college in Macao, returned to Rome for the business of his company, then embarked again to go and govern as provincial one of the missions in Japan. He died in Macau in 1682. In spite of the Italian title, the work does not speak of Japan, but of several missions dependent on what the Jesuits called the province of Japan. The relationship of Tonkin is one of the most important in this region; that of Laos remained for a long time, more or less, the only source to be consulted on this little-known country. A fine example. Minimal work of verse consolidated a few leaves from the beginning. De Backer-Sommervogel V, 582-83; Cordier, Japonica, 377.
