RUGENDAS (Johann Moritz). - Lot 136
RUGENDAS (Johann Moritz). Picturesque trip to Brazil. Paris, Engelmann and Co., London, 1827. In-folio of 100 plates, modern binding in blue half-sagrin, gilt filets on the spine, original delivery cover glued on the plates. One of the most famous and beautiful collections of views of Brazil. 100 plates lithographed by Deroi, Adam, David, Maurin and Vattier from drawings made on the spot by Rugendas. Member of a family of German painters and engravers, Johann Moritz Rugendas accompanied the Russian Baron de Langsdorf to Brazil and then travelled the country on his own account. On his return, he published the report of this journey accompanied by these 100 superb plates. The work is divided into four parts: landscapes, portraits and costumes, Indian mores and customs, and Negro mores and customs. Two editions were given simultaneously, one with the original German text, the other with its French translation, published in 20 issues from 1827 to 1834. A copy without the text but complete with the plates, in a perfect binding using the plates of the first delivery cover. Uniformly burnished paper and essentially marginal freckles on about twenty plates, strong freckles on plates 18 (1st part), 11 to 15 (2nd part), 14 and 20 (4th part), the rest in good condition (minimal marginal stitching on a few plates). Sabin, 73933; Borba der Moraes, p. 221.
