TOURNEFORT (Joseph Pitton de). - Lot 156
TOURNEFORT (Joseph Pitton de). Relation of a journey from the Levant. Amsterdam, at the expense of the Company, 1718. Two volumes in one volume in-4 of (14) ff, 188 pp.; (1) ff, 208 pp., (8) ff, 89 plates, period vellum, red edges. Second edition in in-4 format, published one year after the first. 89 plates engraved outside the text and 45 figures in the text. By order of Louis XIV, Tournefort, one of the greatest botanists of his time, left Paris on 9 March 1700, accompanied by his German colleague Gundelsheimer and the draftsman Claude Aubriet, to go to the Levant to collect medicinal plants. He visited Candie and all the islands of the Archipelago, Constantinople, the southern coasts of the Black Sea, Turkish and Persian Armenia, Georgia, Mount Ararat, and returned via Asia Minor to Smyrna. Tournefort brought back a great deal of information on the mores and customs of the various populations, on the trade of the places visited, on mineralogy, zoology and of course botany with detailed descriptions of 1356 plants, most of them unknown until then. His relationship, illustrated with drawings by the painter Aubriet, is presented in the form of 22 letters addressed to his protector, the Count of Pontchartrain. Very beautiful copy. Stamp Bibliothek Z. Coethen Herzogl on the title.
