[ACADEMIE ROYALE DES SCIENCES]. - Lot 162
[ACADEMIE ROYALE DES SCIENCES]. Dissertations in Mathematics and Physics presented to the Royal Academy of Sciences by various scholars. Paris, Imprimerie Royale (tomes 1 à 7), Moutard et Panckoucke (tomes 8 et 9), Moutard (tomes 10 et 11), 1750-86. Eleven volumes in-4, uniform contemporary marbled calf binding, decorated spines, red edges. First edition. 212 plates without text, most of them folding, and 27 folding tables. This series of papers made during the sessions by authors not belonging to the Académie des Sciences, but whose scientific value had been rigorously tested before, is generally referred to as the Recueil des savants étrangers. This meeting was undertaken by the Academy from 1744 onwards. Many members of provincial learned societies or of the educated public were among the authors. As with the History and Dissertations series, the range of subjects covered is very broad and covers the field of the various scientific disciplines. In particular, we find here Lavoisier's first published work, l'Analyse du Gypse, a dissertation he presented to the Academy at the age of 22, in 1765 (included in Volume V, 1768). Four other memoirs by Lavoisier appear in volume 11, published in 1786. They are: - Mémoire sur des Terres naturellement salpêtrées, existent en France; Read at the Academy on July 5, 1777, by Messrs. Clouet and Lavoisier, Régisseurs des Poudres et Salpêtres. - Mémoire sur des Terres et Pierres naturellement salpêtrées dans la Touraine et dans la Saintonge; By Messrs Clouet and Lavoisier. - Experiments on the Decomposition of Nitre by Coal. - Memoir on the artificial manufacture of Saltpetre. Beautiful and rare complete copy in perfect uniform binding. Detailed snack on request. Duveen and Klickstein, 1, 89 to 92.
