CHEMICAL ANALYSIS or Collection of Memoirs, concerning Chemi - Lot 163
CHEMICAL ANALYSIS or Collection of Memoirs, concerning Chemistry and the Arts dependent on it. By Messrs. de Morveau, Lavoisier, Monge, Berthollet, de Fourcroy, Baron de Dietrich, Hassenfratz and Adet. Paris, Joseph de Boffe, April 1789-July 1793. 18 volumes in 9 volumes in-8 (detailed collation on request), contemporary binding in demibasane, decorated spines, speckled edges. Head of the collection complete until the interruption of the review, which will reappear only in 1797. 21 plates and 3 tables out of text. Created in April 1789 by Lavoisier and his colleagues, the Annales de chimie was intended to be the organ of the partisans of the new chemistry, in opposition to the Observations sur la physique, a journal founded in 1771 by Abbé Rozier, but directed since 1787 by the irreducible "phlogistician" Jean-Claude de La Métherie. Lavoisier's memoirs published in this journal are: - Mémoire sur la combustion du fer (volume I, pp. 19 to 30). - Report of a dissertation by M. Chaptal on some properties of oxigenic muriatic acid; done at the Académie des Sciences (with Berthollet). (Volume I, pp. 69-72). - Observations on platinum (Volume V, pp. 137-141). - Anti-incendiary waters. Report (Volume V, pp. 141-148). - Extract from the registers of the Royal Academy of Sciences, 28 August 1790 (Vol. VII, pp. 257-262). - Memorandum on the various methods proposed for determining the grade or quality of raw saltpetre, on the volatilization of this salt, which takes place by simple boiling, and on the changes which it seems appropriate to make to the operations used up to now for the refining of saltpetre (Vol. XV, pp. 225-267; Vol. XVI, pp. 3-39). - Results of some experiments in Agriculture, and reflections on their relations with political economy, read in 1788, at the Société d'Agriculture de Paris (vol. XV, pp. 297-316). - Report made to the Academy of Sciences, on October 27, 1790, on the title of metals
