[LAVOISIER (Antoine-Laurent de)]. - Lot 169
[LAVOISIER (Antoine-Laurent de)]. Collection of Memoirs and observations on the formation and manufacture of Saltpeter. By the Commissioners appointed by the Academy for the judgement of the Saltpeter Prize. Paris, Lacombe, 1776. In-8 of 55, (1), 622 pp., contemporary speckled calf binding, spine decorated, red edges. First edition. Charged by Turgot to gather all the knowledge concerning the manufacture and use of saltpeter, for the use of the newly created "Régie des Poudres" - of which Lavoisier was one of the directors - the Academy of Sciences appointed a committee composed of Macquer, Sage, Baumé, Montigny, d'Arcy and Lavoisier. Among the various treatises collected and published here are texts by Glauber and Stahl, as well as two memoirs on nitre by Lemery. Lavoisier himself contributed to the work with a memoir on the existence of air in nitrous acid, and on the means of recomposing this acid (page 601-618). Very beautiful and precious personal copy of Lavoisier's book with the ex-libris of his library on the first cover. One will notice that it does not contain in fine the approval sheet of the Academy of Sciences mentioned by Duveen. According to this approval, the choice of the texts would be Montigny's responsibility. However, according to Duveen, "it is difficult not to ascribe this volume chiefly to Lavoisier". It is therefore understandable that he has deleted this leaflet from his personal copy... Duveen and Klickstein, 203 - 204.
