HENCKEL (Jean-Frédéric). - Lot 214
HENCKEL (Jean-Frédéric). Pyritology or natural history of pyrite, a work in which the origin, nature, properties and uses of this important mineral are examined... Paris, Herissant, 1760. in-4 of a frontispiece, (7) ff. (of 9), 403, (1), 524 (of 526) pp., contemporary speckled calf binding, spine decorated with gilt fillets, speckled edges. First edition of the French translation by Baron d'Holbach. Frontispiece and five folding plates engraved out of text. German doctor, naturalist, chemist and mineralogist, director of the Freiberg mines, Henckel, who died in 1744, was one of the pioneers of mineral chemistry. His work on pyrites and other minerals had a great influence and was used, among other things, in the Saxon porcelain industry. Henckel's other mineralogical works, also in the first French edition, have been appended to the edition, with separate pagination. Following the Pyritology, we find: 1) Flora Saturnisans, or evidence of the alliance between the vegetable kingdom and the mineral kingdom... (translation by Charas); 2) Mineralogical Opuscules including a Treatise on Appropriation, a General Idea of the Origin of Stones, a Treatise on the Diseases of Miners and Smelters, and several Mineralogical Dissertations. Very good copy. Bound without the false title and the two table sheets of the chapters. Minimal skin marks at the binding; light but not severe wetness in the upper margin of the leaves at the end of the volume.
