PRIESTLEY (Joseph). - Lot 224
PRIESTLEY (Joseph). Experiments and observations on different air species. Paris, Nyon l'aîné, 1777-80, five volumes. - Experiments and observations on different branches of physics, with a continuation of Observations sur l'Air. Paris, Nyon l'aîné, 1780-87, four volumes. Together two works in nine volumes in-12 of: (1) XXXVI, 434 pp., (1) f., 2 plates; (2) ff., LXII, 297 pp., 1 plate; (2) ff., IV, 352 pp., (2) ff., 5 plates; LII, 404 pp., 1 plate; (2) ff., 404 pp., 1 plate. 2) XXIV, 288 pp., 1 plate; (2) ff. 312 pp.; XXIV, 527, (1) pp., 1 plate; XIV pp., (1) ff. 479 pp., 1 plate, contemporary marbled calf binding, spine decorated with coat of arms at the head, red edges. First French editions. Priestley's hundreds of experiments on different "species of air" led him to identify several gases, mainly oxygen (which the Swedish chemist Scheele had discovered two years earlier). Priestley's research, first published in the Philosophical Transactions of 1772, and then in bookstores from 1774 to 1781, paved the way for Cavendish and beyond at Lavoisier. In the preface to the fourth volume of Experiments in Physics, the translator points out that these two works form a whole. Very fine copy with the arms of La Rochefoucauld. The arms, which appear at the top of the spines, bear the double coat of arms, with the exception of the first volume of the second work, which undoubtedly belongs to the same series. Stamps of the library of the Château de La Roche Guyon on the titles and labels at the foot of the spines. Very rare reunion, especially in such a beautiful condition. A few epiderminations restored on the plates.
