MONGE (Gaspard). - Lot 231
MONGE (Gaspard). Description of the art of cannon making. Paris, de l'Imprimerie du Comité de Salut public, year 2 (1794). In-4 of (2) ff, VIII, 231 pp., 60 pl., 4 tabl., contemporary binding in basane racinée, decorated spine. First edition of this treatise in which the famous mathematician exposes the process of melting cannons by sand casting. 60 plates, most of them folding, and 4 tables. Member of the Academy of Sciences, but also conventional and close to the Jacobins, Monge took part in the war effort of the Revolution by modernizing the manufacture of weapons and by instructing the gunners of the year II. Minister of the Navy from August 12, 1792 to April 13, 1793, he then resumed his courses for students destined for civil engineering, the army and the navy, constituting the embryo of what was to become the Ecole Polytechnique. At the request of the Public Salvation Committee, which had requisitioned the foundries and called on scientists to discover new processes, he developed the technique of sand casting for the manufacture of cannons, much faster than the clay casting in force at the time. This treatise was to serve as both a theoretical and practical manual. Marginal wetings at the beginning of the text and a few plates. Tear at the edge of plate XXX with slight damage to the frame. Wear and restoration at the binding.
