NOLLET (abbé Jean-Antoine). - Lot 238
NOLLET (abbé Jean-Antoine). Lessons in experimental physics. Paris, Durand, Neveu, 1779-1783. Six volumes in-12 of a portrait, (2) ff, CIV, 379 pp., 19 plates; (2) ff, 488 pp., 20 plates; (2) ff, 512 pp., 19 plates; (2) ff, 535, (1) pp.., 14 plates; VI pp., (1) ff., 592 pp., 24 plates; (2) ff., 524 pp., 20 plates, uniform contemporary marbled calf binding, spines decorated, edges marbled. Portrait of Abbé Nollet after Quentin de la Tour in frontispiece and 116 folding plates engraved out of text representing the physics instruments used by him during his demonstrations. Abbé Nollet, whose work on electricity has been particularly well known, spread the fashion for physics and chemistry experiments in France through his public demonstrations, the construction of instruments and the publication of popular works, such as this one, which was a considerable success. An eminent member of the Academy of Sciences, which he joined in 1739, he held the first chair of experimental physics at the University of Paris. Published for the first time from 1743 to 1748, these Lessons were constantly republished. As is often the case, the present copy was formed at the time from volumes from different editions, without affecting the content. Volumes I and II belong to the ninth edition (1783), Volume VI to the eighth (1780), and Volumes III to V, dated 1779, 1784 and 1783, bear the mention of a seventh edition. Very good copy. Manuscript ex-libris on the titles of the six volumes. A few minor glitches and defects in the bindings.
