MAGENDIE (François). - Lot 250
MAGENDIE (François). Elementary precision of physiology. Second edition, corrected and expanded. Paris, Méquignon-Marvis, 1825. Two volumes in-8 of XII, 384 pp., 5 tabl.dépl.; (2) ff. 603 pp., 2 pl., contemporary tawny half-basane binding, decorated spines, marbled edges. 4 folding tables on 5 folios and 2 plates engraved out of text. As a reaction against the speculative attitude that had characterised the end of the 18th century in physiological studies, Magendie focused on the examination of facts and oriented his discipline towards experimental research. This "new physiology" is presented in this book, first published in 1816-17. Volume II discusses the importance of proteins in the diet of mammals. Based on his experiments with dogs, Magendie describes the first cases of avitaminosis (vitamin A deficiency). Small marginal wetness on a few pages of volume I, a few freckles at the beginning of volume II, ink calculations on the back covers of this volume.
